Choosing the Right Wood Part 2 (Ajarn Chunlaporn Nunthapanich)

Rosewood, or what Lanna people call ‘maiduu’ is a durable hardwood. Insects don’t bother it, so Lanna people in the past would use it to make the house pillars or the floor structure. Sometimes, it would be cut and made into floorboards because the wood is dense and durable and has a beautiful grain. In addition to Rosewood being used to build houses, the resin from its bark was used by Lanna people in the past to dye cloth red. I will demonstrate for you how the red rosewood resin along with the bark is boiled and used to dye cloth. Rosewood had many uses. In addition to being used for house structures, pillars, and floors, its bark can be boiled and used to dye yarn red. The bark is boiled in water for a long time and the red water is used to dye yarn red to be woven into cloth.

There are three more types of wood that Lanna people used to build houses. Another is ironwood, which is a local wood that is found in mixed deciduous forests in Northern Thailand, Northeastern Thailand (Esan), and Central Thailand. Ironwood is a hard wood with a beautiful dark red grain, similar to Rosewood. In the past, Lanna people used this wood as house pillars. The tree was chopped down and carved into shape. It was used for pillars, a landing, and joists, and could be cut into floorboards as well. When it was used for a long time, it gets oily because it is such a dense wood. The bark of the wood can also be used as an ingredient in laab because it has properties that will prevent diarrhea. So ironwood is definitely a wood with many uses that has been a part of Lanna culture for a long time.

Lanna people refer to shorea wood as ‘mai ngae’. It is found in deciduous forests. It is a very hard wood, similar to ironwood and rosewood, but its grain isn’t quite as beautiful. Lanna people therefore preferred to use it for house pillars because when it was buried in the earth it wouldn’t rot. It could withstand moisture and pests. It could also be used for the porch structure, girders, and joists. It’s a wood that was commonly used by Lanna people in building houses.

Sal wood, or ‘mai pao’, is found in mixed deciduous forests or grove forests, similar to shorea wood. It is very strong and durable, and insects don’t bother it. Sal wood is more distinctive than shorea wood because it is easy to carve and can shape. It was therefore used as house pillars, porches, girders, and joists, and could be cut into planks to make floorboards. If it is used for a long time, the boards develop a shiny oily character because it is a dense wood.

These five types of wood were commonly used by Lanna people to make houses. They were used for the structure, roof, shingles, porch, joist, floor, doors, and windows. A carpenter, an expert in preparing houses, is able to look at the grain and immediately know what kind of wood it is even after being carved. But carpenters in the North have an even greater expertise. If the wood is damaged after a long period of use, it is hard to determine what kind or wood it is. However, another way to determine the type of wood is to smell it. The smell of each type of wood is different, and so smelling the wood is another way of distinguishing the different types of wood.
