คุณค่าแห่งการประกอบสร้าง ไม้เป็นวัสดุที่ผมเรียกว่างานคราฟ มันมีคุณค่า และเท่าที่ดูในวงการไม้ในการก่อสร้างเรือนในดินแดนล้านนาหรือในเชียงใหม่ มูลค่าจะไม่เคยตกเลย ถึงทำให้เกิดธุรกิจค้าไม้เก่า ทำให้เห็นว่าไม้มีการผลัดเปลี่ยนมากกว่าสองรุ่นอีก คือถ้าไม่โดนแดด ไม่โดนฝน จะอยู่ได้นานมาก

          There is value in carpentry. Wood is a material that I call craftwork. It is valuable, and in the carpentry that you see in the Lanna region or in Chiang Mai, the value doesn’t decrease. For this reason, there’s actually a market for old wood. You can see that there is an alternation of more than just two generations. If the wood isn’t exposed to the sun and rain, it can actually last a long time.

          เราสามารถเก็บไม้ให้รุ่นลูกสร้างต่อ รุ่นลูกรื้อเรือนเก่าของปู่ย่ามาสร้างต่อ ซึ่งสภาพก็ยังดีอยู่ ไม้จึงถือว่าเป็นวัสดุที่ยั่งยืนมากๆ หมุนเวียนใช้งานได้หลายรอบจากรุ่นสู่รุ่น เป็นวัสดุที่เอื้อต่อการนำกลับมาใช้ใหม่ และส่งผลให้สล่า (ช่าง) งานไม้ ทำงานได้หลายๆ รอบ นี่คือคุณค่าการประกอบสร้างของงานไม้ เพราะฉะนั้นสล่าทั้งรุ่นเก่า และรุ่นใหม่ จะให้ความสำคัญกับรอยต่อ สมัยก่อนจะง่ายกว่านี้เพราะยังไม่มีตะปู ก็จะได้ตรงส่วนลิ่ม สลัก เดือย

          We can actually preserve the wood for future generations to use in construction. They can dismantle the older generations houses and use the same wood to build something new, which will still be of high quality. Wood is a very long-lasting and can be reused for many generations. It’s a material that lends itself to being used again, which allows the carpenter to continue their work again and again. This is the value of woodwork. For this reason, old and new carpenters give importance to the points where the wood is joined with other pieces. In the past it was actually easier because there were no nails, it was just bolts and pegs and dowels.

          When you dismantle the wood, it’s easy, and the wood won’t be damaged. It allows one to dismantle the wood and still be able to use it again. Today, we use nails, so you have to be more careful. About 20-30% of the wood is damaged in buildings that use a lot of nails. Nuts have been brought in, which work similarly to wooden bolts and prevent the wood from being damaged, allowing it to be dismantled and reused.

          เวลาเจอสล่า ผมเจออย่างหนึ่งที่เรียกว่า ลูกทิ้ง เวลาสล่า (ช่าง) ทำบ้าน จะเสียดายไม้ เช่น การเอาคานมายาว สล่า (ช่าง) จะไม่ตัด จะปล่อยคาน ปล่อยเสาให้ยาว ซึ่งไม่จำเป็นว่าต้องเท่ากัน ตรงนี้เป็นเสน่ห์อย่างหนึ่ง ซึ่งเป็นลูกทิ้งที่ให้เห็นจังหวะที่ไม่เท่ากัน ทำให้ดูไม่แข็งจนเกินไป มีความนุ่มนวล

          Whenever I meet a carpenter, they do something called ‘luuk ting’. When the carpenter is working on a house, they don’t want to waste wood, so they won’t cut a beam, for example. They will leave the beam long since it’s not necessary that all wood beams be the same length. This is one part of the charm. This luuk ting actually shows you the passage of time. The work isn’t too harsh. It has a warmth to it.

          Another benefit of this is that you can actually use that wood in the future. The wood still has value, which is very interesting. It is part of the local wisdom that the house doesn’t need to be 100% perfect and uniform. It’s actually investing the future use of the wood, for when future generations dismantle the house, they will be able to use the full piece of wood.
